SOME VERY INTERESTING BRAKE-LAMP-LIGHT INSPECTION FAQs

A DMV TEMPORARY VEHICLE MOVING PERMIT (TOP) FOR OFFICIAL BRAKE AND LAMP-LIGHT INSPECTIONS MAY BE NEEDED TO REGISTER A “SALVAGE VEHICLE” IN CALIFORNIA.

THIS INFORMATION WAS OBTAINED FROM CALIFORNIA DMV WEBSITE

BEGINNING ON 07/2011, YOU MAY NEED A CALIFORNIA DMV TEMPORARY VEHICLE MOVING PERMIT TO TAKE YOUR VEHICLE TO AN OFFICIAL BRAKE AND LAMP INSPECTION STATION.THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES (DMV) WILL ISSUE ONE-DAY ONLY VEHICLE MOVING PERMITS (REG 172) IF A BRAKE AND/OR LIGHT INSPECTION CERTIFICATE IS REQUIRED AND HAS NOT BEEN SUBMITTED. ONCE THE BRAKE AND LIGHT CERTIFICATES AND ALL VEHICLE REGISTRATION FEES (CURRENT FEES AND ANY FEES DUE WITHIN THE NEXT 60 DAYS) HAVE BEEN SUBMITTED, A TEMPORARY OPERATING PERMIT (TOP) MAY BE ISSUED.

HOW IT WORKS

TO MOVE A VEHICLE THAT IS REQUIRED TO HAVE A BRAKE AND/OR LIGHT INSPECTION, A REG 172 (VALID FOR ONE DAY) MAY BE OBTAINED FROM A DMV FIELD OFFICE. THERE IS NO FEE FOR THE REG 172; HOWEVER, THE VEHICLE REGISTRATION FEES MUST BE PAID OR THE VEHICLE MUST CURRENTLY BE ON PLANNED NON-OPERATION STATUS.

TO OBTAIN A TOP, SUBMIT THE APPLICATION, THE ORIGINAL BRAKE AND LIGHT CERTIFICATES, AND ALL VEHICLE REGISTRATION FEES (CURRENT FEES AND ANY FEES DUE WITHIN 60 DAYS) TO DMV, AND REQUEST THE T.O.P. (TEMPORARY OPERATING PERMIT)

WHY THE CHANGE OF POLICY?

TO ENSURE PUBLIC SAFETY, THE DEPARTMENT MAY REFUSE REGISTRATION IF A VEHICLE IS MECHANICALLY UNSAFE OR UNFIT TO BE OPERATED OR MOVED ON CALIFORNIA HIGHWAYS

CURRENTLY, A 60-DAY TOP(TEMPORARY OPERATING PERMIT) IS ISSUED WHEN BRAKE AND/OR LIGHT INSPECTION CERTIFICATES ARE REQUIRED AND HAVE NOT BEEN SUBMITTED

DUE TO PUBLIC SAFETY CONCERNS, BRAKE AND LIGHT CERTIFICATES MUST BE COMPLETED AND SUBMITTED TO DMV BEFORE A T.O.P. IS ISSUED

WHAT MAY HAPPEN IF YOU TAKE THE RISK AND DRIVE THE VEHICLE TO THE INSPECTION STATION PRIOR TO OBTAINING THIS PERMIT?

A: YOU MAY BE STOPPED AND ISSUED A MOVING VIOLATION BY A POLICE OFFICER FOR OPERATING AN UNREGISTERED VEHICLE AND ALSO POSSIBLY CITED FOR NOT BEING CURRENTLY INSURED IF YOU DECIDED TO STOP PAYING THE PREMIUM AFTER THE ACCIDENT

ALSO, EXACTLY WHAT MIGHT YOUR CURRENT INSURANCE COMPANY SAY IF YOUR VEHICLE IS INVOLVED IN AN ACCIDENT WHILE OPERATING AN UNREGISTERED VEHICLE WITHOUT DMV PERMISSION?

SAVE THE GRIEF IF YOU ARE UNLUCKY AND JUST GET THE PERMIT!
