PLEASE REFER TO PAGE “LAMP 9” FOR THE ACTUAL HEADLAMP AIMING PROCEDURE USED BY THE TECHNICIAN.

IN READING THROUGH THE 2 HANDBOOKS LINKED ABOVE, WE SEE NO SPECIFIC GUIDANCE FOR THE INSPECTION PROCEDURES TO BE USED FOR MOTORCYCLES, SIMPLY WHICH CLASS OF STATION AND INSPECTOR MAY CERTIFY MOTORCYCLES.

UNDER NORMAL CIRCUMSTANCES, IN A COUNTY WHERE THERE ARE OFFICIAL BRAKE AND LAMP-LIGHT STATIONS NEARBY, A  MOTORCYCLE OWNER WHO IS TRYING TO RE-TITLE THEIR BIKE, MUST LOCATE A STATION AND HAVE AN OFFICIAL INSPECTION.

HERE’S WHAT THE CALIFORNIA DMV HAS TO SAY ABOUT OBTAINING A BRAKE AND LAMP-LIGHT INSPECTION FOR A MOTORCYCLE WHEN YOU CAN’T SEEM TO FIND A LOCAL STATION AND YOU HAPPEN TO LIVE IN ALPINE COUNTY FOR EXAMPLE.FROM OUR INTERPRETATION OF THE EXCEPTION BELOW, THE DMV SEEMS TO BE SAYING THAT ANY AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR DEALER, LICENSED BY THE STATE, MAY FILL OUT A “STATEMENT OF FACTS” (REG256) AFTER CHECKING OUT YOUR BIKE WHICH YOU MERELY PRESENT TO THE DMV FOR A SALVAGE TITLE

THERE ARE SOME COUNTIES WHICH HAVE NO OFFICIAL, LICENSED BRAKE AND LAMP ADJUSTING STATION ANYWHERE WITHIN THEM. THIS MUST FIT THE MEANING OF THE “EXCEPTION” TO THE USUAL RE-REGISTRATION PROCESS.

EXCEPTION: WHEN A CALIFORNIA STATE-LICENSED BRAKE/LIGHT INSPECTION STATION THAT INSPECTS SPECIFIC VEHICLES, SUCH AS MOTORCYCLES OR LARGE COMMERCIAL VEHICLES, IS NOT LOCATED WITHIN A REASONABLE DISTANCE, DMV WILL ACCEPT A “STATEMENT OF FACTS” FROM A CALIFORNIA STATE-LICENSED REPAIR SHOP CERTIFYING THAT THE BRAKES/LIGHTS ARE IN PROPER WORKING ORDER.” (REG 256) <DOWNLOAD AND PRINT THE FORM YOU WILL NEED FROM THE LINK>

OK, SO THAT BEGS THE QUESTION WHAT IS “A REASONABLE DISTANCE”  10 MILES, 20 MILES, 50 MILES OR HUNDREDS OF MILES?

WE ARE CURRENTLY ASSEMBLING A DATABASE OF OFFICIAL CALIFORNIA BRAKE AND LAMP ADJUSTING STATIONS NEAR YOU THAT EITHER PERFORM MOTORCYCLE INSPECTIONS OR ARE WILLING TO “CERTIFY” THAT THE BRAKES AND LIGHTING SYSTEMS ON YOUR BIKE ARE COMPLIANT.

IN THE MEANTIME, YOU ARE LOOKING FOR “CLASS A OR CLASS C STATIONS WHO EMPLOY THE SAME CLASS TECHNICIANS”. ACCORDING TO BUREAU OF AUTOMOTIVE REPAIR REGULATION,

“CLASS A LAMP ADJUSTING STATIONS MAY INSPECT, REPAIR AND CERTIFY ALL VEHICLES, INCLUDING MOTORCYCLES. CLASS BL MAY NOT CERTIFY MOTORCYCLES.

“CLASS A OFFICIAL BRAKE ADJUSTER LICENSES MAY BE ISSUED TO PERSONS WHO HAVE SHOWN BY EXAMINATION THAT THEY ARE QUALIFIED TO TEST, INSPECT, ADJUST, AND REPAIR THE BRAKES AND BRAKE SYSTEM ON ALL VEHICLES INCLUDING MOTORCYCLES AND MOTOR-DRIVEN-CYCLES.”

THE INSPECTION SHOULD COVER THE SAME ISSUES THAT THE PASSENGER VEHICLE INSPECTION COVERS. BRAKE PAD THICKNESS AND ROTOR RUN-OUT FOR DISC BRAKE SYSTEMS. ALL LIGHTS MUST BE WORKING AND THE HEADLIGHT AIMED IN BASICALLY THE SAME MANNER AS PASSENGER VEHICLES.

ALSO REMEMBER THAT IN ORDER TO LEGALLY OPERATE YOUR MOTORCYCLE ON THE STREET ,YOU MAY NEED TO OBTAIN A TEMPORARY OPERATING PERMIT

HOPEFULLY, WE HAVE SUCCEEDED IN GIVING YOU SOME DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF THE ISSUES ASSOCIATED WITH GETTING YOUR MOTORCYCLE BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN. SHARING THIS INFORMATION COMES FROM OUR PASSION FOR THE CALIFORNIA MOTORING LIFESTYLE

FOR FURTHER MOTORCYCLE INSPECTION INFORMATION, PLEASE CONTACT THE INDIVIDUAL STATIONS LISTED ON THIS SITE TO SEE IF THEY PERFORM CALIFORNIA DMV MOTORCYCLE BRAKE AND LIGHT INSPECTIONS FOR YOUR PARTICULAR MAKE AND MODEL OF BIKE.

THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DMV REQUIRES THESE INSPECTIONS USUALLY WHEN THE VEHICLE IN QUESTION HAS BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND THE OWNER IS SEEKING A “REVIVED” SALVAGE CERTIFICATE OR HAVE RECEIVED A CITATION FROM A LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY REQUIRING AN INSPECTION AND CERTIFICATE TO CLEAR. THE STATIONS LISTED HERE ARE SUBJECT TO STATE REGULATION REGARDING THE TRAINING, METHOD, AND EQUIPMENT USED TO CONDUCT THE INSPECTIONS.
